NECB understands today’s adult-learner.

With the creation of new technologies like the smartphone to the evolution of social media, we are constantly engaged online from the minute we wake up until we go to bed. It’s no wonder that online learning has been steadily increasing over the years, especially for adult-learners.

At New England College of Business (NECB), we take pride in offering our students associates, bachelors and master’s degrees, 100% online. Learning online or on campus, there are still areas that students need a little assistance, coaching and discipline to thrive on their journey to earning a degree.

To help you succeed with online learning, we asked our Dean of Enrollment Admissions, Caitrin Brisson, for her top tips to help stay focused when taking online courses which include;

Time Management

Carve out time in your schedule to study and stick to it. Structure is key to managing your time efficiently to adhere to deadlines and meet the expectations of the course requirements.

Utilizing Support Resources

Since you’re not physically on campus, it’s even more important to take advantage of the number of resources and support services offered by your college. For example, at NECB we recommend our students utilize;

  • Grammarly: A very powerful and free online tool that checks spelling and grammar as you type — saving you time.
  • Tutor.com: Offers access to tutors who can help students with on-demand tutoring, essay review and more, plus it’s free for NECB students.
  • Career Services: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. From resume writing, interview skills, one-on-one career counseling support and more — work smarter, not harder!
  • TurnItIn: A plagiarism detection software system to ensure your writing is authentic and your own

Engaging Your Support Network

You are not alone, you have a network available from family, friends, faculty, advisors, etc., to provide the support you need to be successful while you’re taking online classes. Everyone is there to support you every step of the way!

Keeping Your Eye on the Prize

Don’t lose sight of your end goal. There may be bumps in the road but don’t let that discourage you. You decided to enroll in school with the intent to graduate. Continuously remind yourself of what motivated you to take the leap of faith and challenge yourself to stay focused on your goal to complete it.

Reward Yourself

Set goals and reward yourself at points along the way as you achieve them. Treating yourself to something like dinner out, pedicure, movie night, flowers, etc., is a small but important incentive to keep you focused and remind yourself of how far you’ve come. And don’t forget to involve those who are supporting you on this journey!
